The basic staging and medical decision-making procedures for hypopharyngeal cancer include indirect laryngoscopy, direct laryngoscopy with biopsy, contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT) or contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance (CEMR) depending on the practice preference, and a chest x-ray. Radiation therapy is usually the primary treatment for people with hypopharyngeal cancer. An approach called intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) has proven particularly effective against the disease. IMRT allows for the delivery of more-precise doses of radiation to the tumor. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) remain the mainstay of initial radiological evaluation of hypopharyngeal cancer. Imaging usually results in upstaging of the tumor at presentation. Imaging plays a crucial role in the staging of laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancers, particularly when distinguishing the absence or presence of laryngeal cartilage invasion by the tumor and extralaryngeal spread.

1 Cancer of the hypopharynx, though rare with 2500 new cases estimated every year, has similar implications on the individual patient’s well-being and quality of life. Imaging plays a crucial role in the staging of laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancers, particularly when distinguishing the absence or presence of laryngeal cartilage invasion by the tumor and extralaryngeal spread. Cancer of the hypopharynx is relatively rare and accounts for roughly 3% of all head and neck cancers.

Hypopharyngeal carcinoma staging refers to TNM staging of carcinomas originating in the hypopharynx. This system most commonly applies to squamous cell carcinomas but can also apply to rarer epithelial malignancies in the region.

Cancer of the hypopharynx is relatively rare and accounts for roughly 3% of all head and neck cancers. Unfortunately, hypopharyngeal carcinoma has one of the worst prognosis of all head and neck cancers with a reported 5-year overall survival rate of approximately 30-35%. If the apex is involved, the risk of laryngeal invasion is considered too high and total laryngopharyngectomy has to be performed. Low volume hypopharyngeal cancer can be effectively treated by radiotherapy. CT (or MRI) is helpful in selecting patients into a favorable group for radiation treatment, by providing an estimation of tumor volume.

2020-12-04 · European Journal of Radiology 66(3 article is to review currently used imaging protocols for the evaluation of pathologic conditions of the larynx and hypopharynx, Glottic cancer with Forty patients with disorders of the larynx or hypopharynx were studied with magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. Axial, coronal, and sagittal sections, 4 mm thick, were obtained. Twenty-eight of the patients underwent computed tomography (CT) scanning; 17 underwent surgery, and specimens were obtained for organ sectioning.

2001-10-06 · Cancer of the posterior hypopharyngeal wall commonly appears as a flat but often widespread mass lesion, and may spread to the oropharynx; these cancers may also invade the prevertebral muscles. Pyriform sinus cancers have the tendency to grow anteriorly in the laryngeal paraglottic space.
